PhD candidate, bestselling author and former Royal Marines Commando Gareth Timmins, has joined the ROW4MND team alongside Mike Bates (former Royal Marines Commando and Covert MoD Operator), Aaron Kneebone (former Royal Marines Commando) and Matt Parker for their upcoming endurance rowing challenge in support of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research.
On 7th March, weather permitting, the crew will cast off from the slipway and begin their Irish Sea crossing — rowing from the UK coast towards Dublin, before turning north into open water towards Scotland.
This is not simply a row — it is a statement of grit, solidarity and purpose.
Together, the team forms part of a multi-year mission originally championed by the ROW4MND campaign — a relentless rowing initiative that pushes human limits to raise vital funds and awareness to accelerate research into Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a progressive neurological condition that currently has no cure.
The team will set off at dawn, conditions dependent, heading into one of the most challenging marine environments in the British Isles and the world. Over approximately 10 days, the aim is to travel as far north as possible — pushing through tides, waves and wind — with progress dictated by safety and the elements.
